Located close to the South Circular in the inner London suburb of Brixton, Windmill Lodge is a welcoming home that provides a range of respite care and long-term residential dementia care, nursing care, nursing dementia care and end of life care.
Purpose-built, bright and modern, it is a friendly place to live where our team members, many of whom live in the surrounding areas such as Herne Hill, Clapham and Catford, provide care with kindness to the people who live here.
At Windmill Lodge, we look after people as if they were our family. We always treat residents with respect, dignity and compassion, ensuring we find out about each individual’s care, social and wellbeing needs, as well as preferences and life histories.
Using this detailed knowledge, and in partnership with each resident and the people most important in their lives, we build a person-centred care plan which includes an individual’s care and support needs as well as their personal preferences, likes, dislikes and aspirations for the future.
We have replaced written care plans with an up-to-date electronic system that brings together all documentation for a person and gives us a clear overview of their needs. Brilliantly efficient, it allows us to easily track each individual and offer a more personalised approach to their care and support. Members of our care team enter information via touch screen terminals and keep up-to-date with each resident’s requirements, allowing them to respond quickly and appropriately.
We enjoying spending quality time with each resident, chatting about their day, reminiscing, gaining their opinions and generally enjoying each other's company.
Our dedicated approach to care has been reflected in us achieving Beacon Status, the highest possible award given by the Gold Standard Framework for care to people nearing the end of their lives.
Our beautiful home provides a range of communal areas to support residents to spend their time doing things they enjoy.
We have a number of open and airy lounges where residents can chat with friends or catch up on their favourite TV programme, whilst our dining rooms provide the perfect setting in which to enjoy a variety of home-cooked delights during mealtimes. Our seasonal menus are created to reflect residents’ likes and dislikes and include a range of traditional favourites, as well as new things to try. We also cater for people’s dietary and cultural needs.
All of our bedrooms have en-suites and some have views over our landscaped gardens complete with a water feature. Residents are encouraged to personalise their own room with treasured photographs, ornaments, belongings and small items of furniture if they wish, to create a familiar place in which to spend time.
Our other communal areas include a quiet room which is perfect to sit back and relax or meet with visiting family and friends, a tuck shop full of snacks, a large activities room - which is an ideal place for group activities and entertainment - and a sensory room which is particularly beneficial for people living with dementia.
Our dementia care suites are specially designed to create a safe and engaging environment for people living with dementia. They include themed communal areas to provide interest and enjoyment, clear door numbers and memory boxes outside each bedroom for ease of orientation. We also have a wonderful themed train station which is a stimulating and engaging feature for residents to enjoy.
We believe that building a tight-knit community brings peace of mind, harmony and quality of life to all.
With this in mind, we strive to create a warm and welcoming home where our dedicated team members encourage each person to maintain existing hobbies and interests, within a supportive environment where they feel confident to try new things too.
In partnership with residents, we have developed a full calendar of events and activities which give people the opportunity to take part in our many group and one-to-one activities.
From arts and crafts sessions, film nights, quizzes and bingo to book and music clubs – there are a range of activities on offer to enjoy.
We also provide a variety of meaningful exercises specifically for people in the home who are living with dementia, as well as regular reminiscence sessions to prompt happy memories through our close partnership with St Christopher’s Hospice, we take part in their Art for All programme, which helps residents to explore their creativity under the gentle guidance of a volunteer buddy.
Therapy plays an important role in the ongoing wellbeing of residents, so we regularly welcome therapy dogs into the home as well as hold our Namaste programme which focusses on stimulating the senses, promoting meaningful engagement and comfort – it is particularly beneficial to residents who live with advanced dementia.
We also welcome live entertainment, host fun birthday celebrations and visit local places of interest when the weather is good, heading further afield for pub lunches and trips to the seaside, all of which support residents to feel engaged and play an active part in home life.
