St George's Court Care Home resident Michael has been inspiring fellow residents by leading weekly Bujutsu Kai classes, sharing a passion he has enjoyed for more than 30 years.
Bujutsu Kai is a traditional form of Japanese Martial Art that combines self-defence techniques with movements that promote strength, balance and overall wellbeing.
Michael has been practicing the martial art for over three decades, which he first took up to aid his weight loss journey. After seeing the positive impact it had on his physical strength and overall wellbeing, Michael fell in love with the art form.
The team at St George’s Court always encourage people to continue their hobbies when they move in, and suggested that Michael taught some of his friends the principles and techniques as a way of staying active.
Keen to share his passion, Michael began leading gentle, accessible sessions that focus on stretching, balance and simple movements, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to take part. These activities differ from the usual chair-based movement sessions that are hosted inside the care home, and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Bujutsu Kai.
More than just an opportunity to stay active, the sessions have become a wonderful way for people to come together, try something new and share a few smiles along the way.
Belida, who lives at St George’s Court has really enjoyed the classes hosted by Michael. “It’s a fantastic and enjoyable way to keep your body moving,” she said.
By sharing his lifelong passion, Michael has not only helped fellow residents stay active and build confidence but has also found a renewed sense of purpose himself. His weekly sessions continue to bring people together, proving it's never too late to inspire others and try something new.
