Nestled in a quiet residential area of St John’s, near Colchester in Essex, beautiful St Fillans Care Home provides a variety of long-term and respite care, including residential, residential dementia, nursing, nursing dementia and end of life care.
As a purpose-built care home, St Fillans has been carefully designed to offer its treasured residents a wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere, with a variety of stylish, light and airy communal areas coupled with more intimate, yet spacious, en-suite bedrooms.
Our kind and compassionate team members live in the local community, coming from nearby areas such as Highwoods and Greenstead. They take great pride in caring for the people who live here, just like a loving family. As you would expect from a family-owned and run company, we are also here to provide a friendly, listening ear for residents’ loved ones, too.
With over 30 years’ experience in designing and building care homes, Excelcare has a wealth of knowledge when creating a home from home. As a purpose-built care home, which first opened its doors in 2012, St Fillans was built with comfort, safety and a personal approach to care in mind.
With bright airy lounges and dining rooms, spacious en-suite bedrooms and a variety of different welcoming spaces, which are used by residents and visitors, the design of the home supports comfortable living in beautiful surroundings.
Our stylish décor and furnishings have been carefully chosen to create calm and relaxed settings in which to take a nap, rest with a good book, sit by the window watching the wildlife or chat over a cup of tea with friends and visiting family.
We also have a range of rooms which are used for activities and events. They are often filled with laughter, chatting and live musical entertainment, as residents, their friends and family and our team enjoy each other’s company.
Our spacious en-suite bedrooms, some of which are large enough for couples, are fully-furnished. Residents are encouraged to personalise them with photographs, ornaments, books and, if they wish, their own bedding – helping them to feel more at home and settled with precious belongings close to hand. The large-sized rooms and en-suite bathrooms also enable people to remain as independent as possible. The space supports high-quality care with dignity when needed.
Everywhere throughout our care home (and in our pretty and secure landscaped gardens) is wheelchair-friendly, supporting residents to spend their days as they wish, fully utilising everything we have to offer at St Fillans.
At St Fillans, we are dedicated to ensuring everyone leads a full, active and happy life with an abundance of opportunities to enjoy the things they love, whilst being supported to try new things, too.
Our Lifestyle Coordinator, supported by the wider care team, hosts a range of group and one-to-one activities throughout the week, meaning there is always something fun going on.
Activities include arts and crafts, reminiscence afternoons, visits from PAT dogs (pets as therapy), gardening club, movie afternoons in our cinema, pamper sessions in our salon, regular day trips and visits from entertainers. Residents’ days are filled with enjoyment, fun and laughter and we also encourage mobility and mental wellbeing too, with light exercise classes, movement to music and chair yoga.
We never let a special occasion pass us by or miss an opportunity to welcome friends, families and members of our local community into our lovely home to celebrate with us. From flipping pancakes, making Easter bonnets, holding a special lunch for Mother’s Day or baking a cake to celebrate a resident’s birthday, there’s never a dull moment!
Our mealtimes are one of the many highlights of our residents’ day as our dining tables are beautifully laid and home-cooked favourites are served daily. Our seasonal menus are created in partnership with residents and feature fresh seasonal produce from our vegetable garden, which is lovingly tended by residents. We also cater for special dietary requirements and cultural preferences.
As a team, we strongly believe that we have the privilege of working in our residents’ home, not that they live where we work, which is reflected in daily life at St Fillans.
By really getting to know and understand each resident as the special individual they are, we build a detailed picture of not only their care needs, but also their likes, dislikes, their hopes and dreams and who in their life is really important to them. This supports us to provide tailored care and opportunities especially for them.
Dignity, freedom of choice and the support to remain as independent as possible are values we hold dear at St Fillans. With this in mind, residents and those closest to them, are actively involved in how things are run. We also hold regular resident and relative meetings to gain ideas and feedback.
We understand the importance of supporting relatives and friends to remain an active part of our residents’ lives. We welcome visits throughout each day, and encourage loved ones to dine with us or join us for activities.
We are also dedicated to ensuring we extend our care and attention to residents’ families too, supporting them and offering peace of mind so they are able to enjoy spending quality time with their loved one, in the comfort of knowing they are well cared for, happy and safe.
Through our sensitive, warm and inclusive approach to care, we are proud to have created a friendly, welcoming and relaxed home. Residents are supported to be their true selves, living comfortably and spending their time doing the things which bring them joy and happiness.
