At Ashlyn Care Home in Harlow, the team like to ensure they keep the activity schedule varied, so there is something to suit everyone’s likes and interests.
One way the team achieve this is by listening to group discussions and matching activities around the subject of those conversations. The team recently heard a group of residents talking about birds, their favourite species and how some of them used to go bird watching.
Many residents showed interest in this conversation and so Lifestyle Coordinator, Toni, organised for Steve and Jackie Owls to visit Ashlyn with their birds.
When residents heard about this, they were all excited to meet Steve and Jackie’s birds.
Steve and Jackie bought their best-behaved Owl, Nova, with them to meet the people living at Ashlyn. As Steve and Jackie made their way around the home and introduced Nova to residents, they shared some interesting facts about Owls. This included that they like to sit up high so they can see what’s going on and that they can turn their heads almost all the way around.
Nova raised many smiles at Ashlyn, and everyone enjoyed stroking her soft fur.
After this successful visit, the team will be planning more animal visits throughout the year.
