The team at St Fillans Care Home in Essex have been encouraging reminiscence through person-centred activities.
Lawrence, one of the people who lives at the home, has served at all levels in the Army. Some of his ranks include Senior Warrant Officer, as well as brigade and above.
When sat down with the team, Lawrence enjoyed sharing stories from his days in the Army with the team. So, they decided to take this further, and turn it into a reminiscence activity.
Lawrence specifically mentioned that while he was in the Army, he really enjoyed shining his shoes. Therefore, the team brought his boots downstairs, along with some shoe polish and a polishing brush.
Lawrence loved the activity, getting stuck straight in while he taught the team members all the best tips and tricks. He told them that back then, if your boots were not up to standard, then you would have to carry on until they were! The Army didn’t allow for any excuses, so those boots had to sparkle and shine.
Lawrence was true to his word, and by the end of the session the boots were as polished as they could possibly be. Lawrence also had a big smile on his face, and thoroughly enjoyed the trip down memory lane.
