Thirty-five members of the Excelcare family laced up their running shoes last weekend to take part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life Pretty Muddy 5K at Beckenham Place Park.

After celebrating her birthday by taking part in the event last year, Chief Operating Officer Sam Manning was inspired by the teamwork and camaraderie she experienced, making her eager to return this year.

Team members from Excelcare’s Support Office in Bromley and care homes across the group joined Sam for this year’s challenge, putting their fitness to the test while raising funds for two important causes: Cancer Research UK and The Excelcare Foundation.

Before the race began, the team gathered at the starting line in their charity T-shirts for a group warm-up led by the Pretty Muddy event team. During this, participants heard powerful stories from people affected by cancer, who shared their personal reasons for taking part. It was a moving moment that encouraged everyone to reflect on the loved ones and colleagues in their own lives who have been impacted by Cancer.

Over the 5K course, the team jogged, walked, crawled and slid their way through a series of muddy obstacles. Their determination was matched only by their support for one another, with plenty of memorable moments along the way. Sonnie helped teammates by holding up the netting at one obstacle to make it easier for everyone to pass through, while Maddie and Sam crossed the finish line hand in hand in a heartwarming display of teamwork.

The bright pink tops they started the race in were barely recognisable by the end. Despite the mess, every participant crossed the finish line smiling, proud of what they had achieved together and the memories they had made along the way.

After collecting their medals and posing for a group photo, the team celebrated with a well-earned picnic in the park and some time to relax after their achievement.

To top it all off, the team raised an incredible £2,500. In an inspiring show of support, Excelcare’s CEO Osman ‘Ozzie’ Ertosun generously matched the total, meaning more than £2,000 was donated to each charity, helping both Cancer Research UK and The Excelcare Foundation continue their vital work.
