The people living at Abbot Care Home in Essex love a bit of friendly competition. Because of this, the Lifestyle Coordinators plan a variety of fun and stimulating team sports, encouraging as many people to get involved as possible.
Recently, the people living at the home enjoyed a riveting game of balloon volleyball, which proved to be a fun, competitive activity. The team set it up, opting to use an extra-large latex balloon instead of a conventional balloon, as this hangs in the air longer and would allow everyone more time to hit and catch it.
The game was a hit in Kingfisher Lounge, where many people got involved and actively participated. Some people opted for a traditional method, hitting the ball with their hands, whilst others chose to try something a little different and kick the ball with their feet. There was singing and laughter throughout, and everybody had a big smile on their face as they played. In fact, nobody wanted the game to end, and they played along for over an hour!
Not only is balloon volleyball an enjoyable activity, but it’s also a great seated exercise that tests hand eye coordination and reflexes, as well as social and sensory stimulation. Balloon volleyball has clearly proven to be incredibly popular in the home, so the people at Abbot will certainly be playing it again in the future.
