The smell of fresh cookies was in the air at Okeley Care Home recently as the team hosted a baking activity.
Baking activities are well enjoyed by the residents, as for many, it’s a hobby they have practiced throughout their lives. In the residents’ younger years, it was much cheaper to make and bake foods than it was to buy them, so many picked up cooking skills in their youth that are still with them today.
Baking also has a positive impact on a person's wellbeing, so the team build baking sessions into the activity schedule on a regular basis.
During this most recent session, people made cookies. To do this, they were each given ingredients to mix up until the consistency was correct, before moulding the dough into small balls on an oven tray. Whilst doing this, they shared memories between them and what their favourite recipes to make are.
Before the kitchen team took the cookies to bake, people placed one M&M chocolate on top for some added sweetness and colour.
Later in the day, the kitchen team came back with trays of freshly baked cookies for people to enjoy. The team were on hand to serve hot drinks as people snacked on the cookies they had made. Everyone agreed they tasted delicious, but also shared their recommendations about ways to make other types of cookies.
It was a well enjoyed day and everyone is looking forward to the next baking session.
