Agnes lives at The Willows Care Home in Milton Keynes and recently told the story of a special place she used to visit with her husband.
Agnes was just 20 when she married Ernest back on the 15th March, 1941. During these times she was working as a bank cashier, whilst her husband was a part time Wrestler. “I went to watch him wrestle once, but that was enough,” Agnes said.
One love Agnes and her husband shared was a love of walking and staying active. Their favourite place to walk was the picturesque Willen Lake, where they would do three or four laps whilst taking in the scenic views. During their walk, they would also stop by a small cabin on the lake, pick up some drinks and food, then enjoy them sitting on a bench positioned on the waterfront.
This was a pastime they shared for 40 years! Until Ernest sadly passed away in 1996.
After hearing agnes’ story, the team at The Willows wanted to take her back to Willen Lake to enjoy the same walk and recall the fond memories she has there. And so they did! Agnes and her friend were recently taken to Willen Lake and Agnes said it’s still as beautiful as it always was, all with some improvements.
The small cabin Agnes and her husband used to drink at is now a lakeside pub! And the bench they used to sit on has been replaced with a newer one.
It was a day of mixed emotions – sadness that her husband wasn’t there to enjoy it with her, but happiness that she got to revisit a place that is very close to her heart.
