Since the announcement of the COVID-19 outbreak, we have been overwhelmed with the incredible support and acts of kindness witnessed both inside and outside of Excelcare.
People are going out of their way to not only donate items but share letters and gestures of goodwill, to support key workers and those who are most vulnerable.
We call these people 'community heroes' and seeing all the incredible things they have done has been inspiring.
Karen is Cambridgeshire Lady who runs a page called ‘Una the Unicorn’. She uses this page to spread love, hope and inspiration to keep the surrounding community in good spirits. She also tours the town dressed as Una to spread some extra local cheer.
Karen said she originally bought the costume to visit poorly children in hospital but the visiting restrictions meant she wasn’t allowed. She wasn’t going to let it go to waste though, so Karen dressed up and went for a walk in the community, clapping, cheering and waving to passers-by. She’s since become a bit of a local celebrity and is now known for her colourful costume and positive outlook.
During one of her recent walks, Karen spotted Brook House Care Home and wondered whether her costume could bring a few smiles to the residents. So she asked Home manager, Anca, if she could do a socially distanced tour of the garden. Anca jumped at the chance as she knew all the residents and team members would love it.
Anca quickly went around the home to spread the news of their special garden visitor. Residents were soon al gathered at the window, ready to see what all the fuss was about. When they saw the colourful unicorn dancing around their garden they were all delighted. There was lots of laughter and cheers coming from the windows as the residents encouraged her. It was a really nice surprise that got everyone in good spirits for the afternoon.
Joan, a resident at Brook House, was elated to see the unicorn and loved the bright colours, so team have arranged for special return visit on her 100th birthday next month!
Thank you Karen for spreading the cheer at Brook House and around the Cambridge region, you truly are a community hero!
