With the festive month here, everybody is getting into the Christmas spirit as much as they can, especially at St Fillans Care Home in Essex.
Recently, the Lifestyle Co-ordinators at St Fillans decided to spread some Christmas cheer by making a Christmas themed Touch and Feel sensory board for the people living at home that are nursed in bed.
Sensory stimulation offers a safe, mood-enhancing environment that improves quality of life, so the team at St Fillans love putting together sensory boards for everyone who lives at the home. This Christmas themed sensory board was made using different types of tinsel, baubles, berries and small stems of a Christmas tree. The mix of materials each provide a different feel, perfect for sensory stimulation.
The people at St Fillans found this activity very calming, and many said that it brought back memories of when they would decorate their own trees. One resident particularly enjoyed the red tinsel, mentioning that “Red was always on my tree and I always had a red star”.
The sensory board was a big success, and the team plans to add more items to the board throughout the month of September. Everybody who took part is looking forward to seeing what they add next!
