The people living at Etheldred House Care Home in Histon love to get involved in local community projects. So, when Geraldine’s relatives encouraged everyone at the home to grow a potato, they very excitedly stepped up to the challenge.
Geraldine’s family popped round one day with a paper bag and a challenge for the home: plant a potato as part of the Elsworth potato grow-off.
The Elsworth potato grow-off is a fundraising competition organised on behalf of Holy Trinity Church. Many members of the local community get involved, and Geraldine’s family wanted to make sure that she was a part of it!
The team at Etheldred House worked with Geraldine to make sure this potato had the best chances at growth. They planted the potato in a big pot and tended to it regularly, even naming it ‘Pete the potato’!
At the end of July, they finally harvested the crop and were excited to see the fruits of their labour. Though it wasn’t a bumper crop, there were still a few lovely potatoes, so everyone at the home deemed it a big success!
Geraldine and her son were very pleased to see fresh growing potatoes, and Geraldine would love to compete in the Elsworth potato grow-off again next year!
