Mervyn, a person living at Hunters Down Care Home in Cambridge, recently shared his life story with the team.
Mervyn was born in Somersham in 1922, making him 99 years old now. He learnt to play the piano as a child and would often serenade people with a tune or two on the organ that he still has at his home.
His first job was a paper round, where he would cover up to a 40-mile radius with his bike. Mervyn said that this would keep him very fit! He then grew up to join the railway and was positioned as a fireman on the steam trains before becoming a driver on diesel trains. He loved being a train driver, as it took him all over East Anglia.
Mervyn met his wife Elizabeth at a dance hall, and they married in 1947. They never had children, but they did own seven dogs – a mix of German Pointers and Golden Retrievers – which they considered their babies.
Mervyn and Elizabeth had lots of fun adventures together. They were both part of an air rifle club, where they would join target competitions and regularly take home trophies and badges. They also enjoyed many holidays to places all over the world, including the Canadian Rockies, Norway, Denmark, Poland, Spain, Italy, and his personal favourite, Austria.
Now, Marvin lives at Hunters Down Care Home in Cambridge, where he has made lots of friends and is loved by the team members. His favourite pastimes at the home include listening to bagpipe music and watching cowboy films featuring John Wayne. He also really enjoys tucking into the kitchen team’s fish and chips and Sunday roasts.
