The residents of Brook House Care Home were transported into the atmosphere for National Space Day recently, as they discussed the galaxy and all things planetary.
Everyone was excited to celebrate the day and get stuck into their own space project. Lifestyle Coordinator, Jade, had prepped for the day by printing some interesting facts that she found on NASA’s website.
These were used as conversation starters and residents began to ask questions relating to the topic such as did men really walk on the moon, is there more than us out there and also if their friends would like to travel to space.
It was really interesting to hear everyone's different perspectives. Some people thought the space race put pressure on people to visit the moon and so it was staged, whilst others believed it really happened! After sharing their viewpoints, the group began to discuss their favourite planets and were tasked with picking ones they wanted to make using craft materials.
All of the items they needed were placed on the table, alongside a variety of sponges to paint the planet with. Connie, who lives at the home, said she found using the sponge was much easier than using a paintbrush. She also enjoyed getting a bit messy with the paints too!
They also made a rocket ship together using recycled materials such as kitchen roll tubes and some old cards. Residents said this brought back memories from their school years as they would frequently take in empty packets to use in craft projects.
It was a really enjoyable day that encouraged conversation and creativity. This project was certainly a success so more space-themed activities will be on the schedule throughout the year.
