Wednesday 14th April was National Gardening Day, and the Lifestyle Coordinators at Etheldred House Care Home in Cambridge made sure that they packed it full of fun, themed activities.
They began the day with an exciting competition, seeing whose sunflower will grow the quickest. The people living in the home got to pot their own sunflower and leave it to grow on the windowsill. Once they reach a certain height, they will be planted in the garden. The race is on to see whose sunflower will grow the tallest, and everyone is excited to see who wins!
The second activity involved identifying an assortment of herbs. The herbs were all in their separate pots so the Lifestyle Coordinators could take them around to everyone to smell. People took turns smelling the plants and trying to guess what each herb was. This resulted in a lot of reminiscence, as people thought back to their favourite dishes that they used to put the herbs in. The herbs will be planted in Etheldred’s garden so that the chef can use them in meals.
After this, the team presented everyone with a challenge. They brought out large, cut out letters and challenged the residents to arrange them to make the names of the herbs that they had in front of them. Some of the herb names were quite tricky to spell, but they had a go anyway, which resulted in lots of smiles and laughter. After this, the team also brought out a garden themed wordsearch, which many were very excited to have a go at.
Overall, the people living at Etheldred House had a fantastic, garden themed day, and look forward to more gardening activities in the future.
