The people living at Etheldred House Care Home in Cambridge had a wonderful time celebrating Burns Night Last Week.
Burns Night is a celebration of the life and work of Scottish poet Robert Burns. The day is usually celebrated by having a Scottish supper and enjoying some of his poems. Burns Night has become a key part of Scotland’s identity and tradition, and celebrates creativity, empathy and understanding for the experiences of others.
The team used the holiday to share some lovely poems and songs composed by Robert Burns, which everyone enjoyed and discussed their opinions. Everyone agreed that Burns had a wonderful way with words, and all of the readers worked together to decipher the meaning of some of his more poetic lines.
Then they passed around some Scottish items for everyone to have a look and feel of, including a woollen shawl and a brooch. This led to a lot of conversation about the items, as well as some reminiscence, with one resident recounting how they used to spend some holidays in Scotland.
These discussions were accompanied with some wonderful Scottish treats and refreshments, and everyone had a wonderful time. They learnt a lot about Robert Burns, and much about Scotland and Scottish traditions.
