Dorothy is a resident at Hunters Down Care Home who recently sat down with Lifestyle and Wellbeing Lead, Pearl to tell her about her life.
Dorothy started her story by telling Pearl about her role at the Imperial Chemical Industry, a place where she worked for three years. She complimented her team and said they were all very nice, adding that the pay was also very good.
Dorothy then decided to have a career change and train to become a teacher. During her training, she took on a variety of different roles so she could maintain her income. One of them was being the governess for a Woollen merchant’s daughter. She remembers her time there well, but once qualified as a teacher, Dorothy gave up this job to pursue her passion.
She soon began working at Ravensthorpe Junior School. This was a place close to her heart as it was the junior school that she attended as a child. She was surprised to find a few of the teachers that taught her still teaching there which made for some happy reunions. “I’ll never forget how supportive they were,” said Dorothy.
Dorothy then spoke fondly of her husband Alfred, recalling the moment they met at a volunteering group helping elderly people. She said Alfred was a living saint and would do anything to help anyone.
Some of the passions they shared included bowling and sports. Whilst Dorothy particularly enjoyed tennis and was very good at it, Alfred was more into motors and building his own sports cars. Dorothy loved this about him and has happy memories of travelling in them to France and waving at the locals.
Now living at Hunters Down Care Home in Cambridge, Dorothy has these wonderful memories that she enjoys sharing. She said she is very happy to be there and said the team look after her “extremely well.”
