The people living at Windmill Lodge Care Home were excited to see the sun shining down this week, so they used the opportunity to get out in the garden to plant some fresh flowers and spend time closer to nature.
Time in the garden is enjoyed by each and every resident. Whether that’s taking part in the activities or just enjoying some relaxation – it’s beneficial for all!
This activity saw residents plant bell peppers and rose stems, which would not only brighten their outdoor space but hopefully allow them to grow some fresh vegetables they can use in mealtime recipes. While they planted the plants, they saw some snails of different sizes crawling around the table. This helped to spark some memories and took residents on a trip down memory lane.
Anthony, who lives at Windmill Lodge said he used to pick up snails when he was a young boy growing up in Ireland. Lifestyle Coordinator, Susan, added her grandson frequently finds snails in bushes when he goes fishing with his dad. Grace, who is also a Lifestyle Coordinator, said she used to pick them up and take them to her room, but her mother would always say she didn’t want them in the house. So Instead, grace and her brother would build them small mud houses in the garden.
Everyone enjoyed listening to each other’s childhood tales and found it funny to hear about what they used to get up to. They enjoyed chatting amongst themselves for the rest of the session whilst taking in the sun and having some refreshments.
Everyone had a wonderful day in the garden, planting and chatting! They all hope the lovely weather continues so the plants grow quickly and more days like this can be spent in their outdoor space!
