Throughout the month of October, the people living at Peartree Care Home in Sydenham joined in with the national celebrations for Black History Month!
Peartree is home to people from all different cultures, backgrounds, ethnicities and faiths and black history month provides the team with the opportunity to celebrate this, alongside the achievements of black people.
Throughout October, the team organised a range of different activities and events to take place that celebrated black culture. From encouraging residents and team members to wear traditional dress, to sampling food from around the world and refreshing their memories about some of the most celebrated black people throughout history and the things they achieved. The team also hosted craft sessions to celebrate black history, one of which encouraged people to make flags from their home countries that could be displayed around the home!
As well as celebrating the achievements of black people, the people living and working at Peartree also observed the 75th anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush that docked in Tilbury, Essex, carrying passengers from the Caribbean in 1948.
The people aboard this ship played a pivotal role in supporting Britain to rebuild and get back on its feet after the destruction of the world wars. Many of the people living and working at Peartree have close relatives who were aboard this boat, so it was personal to many and they all enjoyed celebrating the achievements of the Windrush generation as part of Black History Month.
