For decades, Jean has devoted her life to caring for others across her community in Cambridge, and her extraordinary contribution has now been recognised with a British Empire Medal (BEM).

From helping children discover a love of reading to ensuring older people never went without a hot meal or a friendly face, Jean’s kindness has touched generations of families through her school, church and local community.

Jean believes her passion for helping others began at home, inspired by the woman she admired most.

“My mother was the kindest and most caring person I have ever known. She taught me the importance of caring for others and always helping those in need. Whenever I’m caring for someone, I feel like I’m carrying a part of her with me.”

At St Philip’s School, Jean became a familiar and much-loved figure. Many former pupils credit her patient encouragement with helping them learn to read, while parents knew she was someone they could turn to for sensible advice. She also served as a school governor, spent 15 years as treasurer of the Parent Teacher Association alongside her husband, organised summer fairs and Christmas celebrations, and became known for baking fresh cheese and fruit scones for staff every fortnight.

Following an injury to a member of staff during the winter of 2016, Jean stepped in as a relief midday supervisor three days a week, continuing in the role even at the age of 85.

Her generosity reached far beyond the classroom. At Ramsey Mill Community Centre, Jean helped create opportunities for young people to grow in confidence, running an after-school girls’ club for many years and organising activities including memorable trips to the seaside. 

One of Jean’s greatest legacies began in the early 1980s, when she noticed that many older people in her community were living alone and rarely enjoying a home-cooked meal. Determined to change that, she established a weekly lunch club at St Philip’s Church.

What started as a simple act of kindness soon became the highlight of the week for 25 to 30 people, offering companionship, laughter and a freshly prepared meal for a small cost. Jean did not stop there; she regularly visited members when they were unwell, supported those in hospital, and helped people feel connected when they had no family nearby. Alongside the lunch club, she cooked for church celebrations and Alpha groups, and even delivered meals to a halfway house supporting people with mental health challenges.

When asked what she remembers most from her remarkable years of service, Jean doesn’t point to a single achievement.

“I remember the feeling of wanting to help people and always wishing the best for everyone who needed my support. I’ve always believed that my purpose is to care for others, regardless of the circumstances, and that’s been the most rewarding part of my career.”

Receiving the British Empire Medal came as a complete surprise. Jean was accompanied by her daughter to the presentation ceremony at the Guildhall in Cambridge, where she became the first member of her family to receive such an honour.

“My first reaction was probably surprise because I really didn’t expect to receive one. Of course, I was absolutely thrilled.”

As part of the celebrations, Jean was also invited to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, an experience she describes as unforgettable.

“I remember receiving the invitation, and it felt incredibly exciting. It all felt very special, and I remember feeling a real sense of anticipation.”

While Jean has never sought recognition, her British Empire Medal is a fitting tribute to a lifetime of making the world a kinder place. Through her compassion, generosity and unwavering dedication, she has helped children flourish, strengthened families and ensured countless people have known that someone cares.

Now living at Brook House Care Home, Jean continues to inspire the people who live and work there through her stories and regular acts of kindness.
