The people living at Windmill Lodge Care Home have been celebrating Black History Month throughout October. Windmill Lodge is home to people from all different countries, faiths and cultures, so they recently held a Black History Month Tea Party so people could share their stories and memories of the countries they come from.
The team set up the room with flags from around the world and Black History Month placemats. Cakes were placed on tables and people’s favourite hot drinks were served when they were in their seats.
The many flags on walls around the room started conversations about countries people had visited. This brought back many fond memories of family holidays and time spent exploring different parts of the world.
Residents also spoke about the countries they were born and how different life is in the UK.
Some people shared memories of the luscious white sand and beautiful blue sea in the Dominican Republic. Memories of playing on the beach and splashing in the warm showed how different life was in the Caribbean. People also shared memories of the luscious green plants that grew, which was a memory shared with people who were born in Jamaica and Mauritius.
With the frequent rainfall and hot sunshine, people also discussed the different fruits and exotic plants that grow in these parts of the world.
People then started to discuss the first time they came to UK and experienced the weather. There was lots of laughter as people said how cold and gloomy the climate was, and how inadequately dressed they were.
It was a wonderful afternoon spent sharing stories and memories of people’s cultures and the countries they grew up in.
Throughout the rest of the month, celebrations of black history will continue with live musical entertainment and traditional African games.
