St George’s Residents receive flower inspiration from Sewa Day project
Residents at St George's Court have loved receiving some of the amazing drawings and creative artwork made by the children and teenagers taking part in the Sewa Day Scheme. Sewa Day is a series of international days of volunteering, held numerous times a year to spread joy across different communities. A number of Excelcare’s Care Homes have been the lucky recipients of these beautiful gifts.
The Sewa Day creations are always shown around the home to the residents on all three floors and there is always much discussion about them. One picture in particular from the last batch caught the resident’s eye. This was a special piece of art that had been made by eight-year old Iniya, from Basingstoke. Her creation was an assortment of flowers made from different materials. This sparked an idea in some of the residents, who decided that they would like to try to make something similar.
Lifestyle and Wellbeing Lead Pearl, placed a large variety of items for the resident to work their magic with. These included pipe cleaners, feathers, coloured paper, coloured cake cases, tissue paper and fuzzy pom-poms.
A resident of the home, Betty said she enjoyed using the pipe cleaners, feeling and bending them into flower shapes. Resident Annis had wanted to make some snow drops so with a little bit of help from team member Helen, they worked together and used white pipe cleaners with some fuzzy pom-poms.
Once everyone had made their flowers, they were then all placed onto colourful pieces of paper. The finished results are now proudly displayed on the home’s picture board for all residents and team members to enjoy.
The residents of St George’s Court said they surprised themselves with just how great their flower artwork was. Resident Christine said, “I wonder what will arrive in the next batch and if we’ll get even more inspiration from them?”
