Over the last couple of weeks, residents at Rheola Care Home have been overwhelmed with donations and offers of support from people in the local community. Families, friends and businesses have all pulled together to offer a helping hand.
Pizza town, the Swan and Angel and St Ives District Nursing Team, are just some of the local groups who have been kind enough to donate items to the team at Rheola. Some of these donations have included personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep people safe, while others included food and special treats for everyone to enjoy.
This week the donations continued when Shirley stopped by with a special care package for Rheola.
Shirley is a lovely lady who volunteers at Rheola and before this pandemic, would help to organise activities and go on day trips with the residents. Her commitment to the residents has been inspiring to see and they all enjoy her company.
When she arrived at the home, everyone was really excited to see her. But as restrictions are still in place, she had to keep her distance and leave the products at the door.
Unlike the other donations they have received, Shirley’s was a box of board games and activities to keep the residents entertained. Board games, especially the more traditional ones, are familiar for the residents and other games like dominos happen daily. Knowing how much the residents enjoy playing these games together, Shirley wanted to make sure her donation would encourage more of this, especially while families can’t visit.
One of the most popular games in the pack was a large Connect 4 game. As it was much bigger than the usual, it got lots of attention and seemed to be enjoyed more than the traditional version.
After playing some of the games, the residents started a competition between them to see who could score the most points. Throwing beans bags at targets and ‘Hoopla’ were some of the other games they played together, before testing out the foot spa to unwind!
Shirley’s donation has not only boosted wellbeing at the home but inspired more group games and activities too. Thank you for your continued support Shirley, we look forward to seeing you soon!
