Roxana was born in 1933 in the district of Cumberland, Jamaica, where she lived with her mother, father, and three siblings, Palty, Clovis, and Esden.
Roxana enjoyed her childhood in Jamaica and attended school from the age of 5. She enjoyed going to school, learning from her teachers, and picking up new skills along the way.
Dressmaking captured Roxana’s attention, as it was a useful skill that could make her some money too. So after leaving school at the age of 17, Roxana dedicated her time to learning more about dress-making and developing her skills with textiles.
Her next memorable life milestone was meeting Wilfred. They married when Roxana was just 21 and went on to have five children together. It was at this point in their life that they decided to take a leap of faith and start a new life in England. Wilfred flew over first and Roxana joined him a few weeks later with their children.
Her first job in the UK was at a factory in Harlesden making DIY products. It wasn't quite the same as dress-making, but her crafting skills certainly helped in this role. She then moved on to make car parts at a factory in New Cross but after deciding this wasn’t what she wanted to do, she switched career paths and began to work as a carer at a care home in Ladywell. Roxana enjoyed this role as it was more people-focused and she could see how her role positively impacted people’s lives.
Her final role before heading into retirement was at Greenwich Hospital, where she worked as a Catering Assistant for 10 years!
Now living at Peartree Care Home in Sydenham, Roxana still maintains her faith and enjoys regular visits from the pastor. She has also made good friends with a lady named Sylvia, so they can usually be found putting the world to rights together!
Roxana is also incredibly proud of her growing family, which includes her 5 children, 16 Grandchildren, and 11 Great Children. Visits from her family are always cherished and keep Roxana smiling.
