Poetry Day at Primrose Croft Care Home was celebrated with a virtual poetry session with Diane.
Diane is a friend of Lifestyle and Wellbeing Lead, Pearl, who introduced her to the residents of Primrose Croft. Diane has a passion for poetry and language and has recited poems before, so she was the perfect person to host this session with the residents.
Due to the current restrictions, this poetry session was hosted virtually. Laptops were set up on each floor so residents in the different suites could tune into the session.
Diane began by introducing herself and got to know the residents a bit before starting. She then began to read a selection of poems which included:
· Leisure, by WH Davies
· Warning, by Jenny Joseph
· A red red rose, by Robert Burns
· How dirty the little crocodile, by Lewis Carroll
· Little Things, by Ebenezer Cobham Brewer
· And any more!
The people living at Primrose Croft recognised some of these poems and some even remembered learning about them at school.
Their favorite poem was ‘Warning’ by Jenny Joseph, which was about growing old and how when we reach retirement age, we should be able to throw off social responsibilities and do what we like.
The residents had a really enjoyable afternoon reading poetry with Diane and learning about the meanings behind each of them. Not only did it encourage reminiscence, but also inspired residents to write their own poems in connection with ‘Warning’ by Jenny Joseph.
