With the weather being exceptionally hot recently, the residents of Glennfield Care Home have been keeping cool inside after taking in a bit of the glorious sunshine. During these cooler moments inside conversation turned to fun activities that everyone could enjoy whilst keeping cool.
Baking was suggested and supported by everyone as their favourite, but what to bake? After some discussion and reminiscing about their favourite past bakes, everyone at Glennfield decided on Rocky Road Brownies. Originally derived from Australia, the recipe was created as a way to sell confectionary that had spoiled during the long trip from Europe. Locally grown nuts and fruit would be added to improve the flavour and give it some crunch.
It is a very simple and fun recipe to make, so it was perfect for residents to get creative and have fun. Everyone gathered around the baking area together as they love working on projects together. Digestive biscuits were crushed up inside a sealed bag with a rolling pin, with everyone having a good old bash at the biscuits. Butter was then weighed out, along with golden syrup and chocolate. A few chunks of chocolate may have gone ‘missing’ into the mouths of everyone gathered.
The mix was then placed into the microwave to melt and then marshmallows and biscuit chunks were added. Residents then got to work lining a baking tray with baking paper and pouring over the mix. This was then popped into the fridge to set.
Residents had a great time during this activity and it gave them a chance to discuss and reminisce about many different topics as well as baking. Although, as soon as the brownies were ready to eat everyone fell silent as they enjoyed tucking into the fruits of their labour.
