Sarah, a Lifestyle Coordinator at Aliwal Manor is always thinking of ways to recycle items at the home and use them to make entertaining games.
After decorating the home, Sarah realised there were some leftover baubles that could be used for a game. First of all, she encouraged people to decorate them as they love taking part in arts and craft activities. So, the residents got to work drawing Christmas items and patterns onto the baubles using acrylic pens.
After the baubles had been decorated, Sarah collected some other left-over items from her activity cupboard. Using toilet roll tubs and a long cardboard strip, Sarah set up a bowling activity that the residents could take part in from their seats. The empty toilet roll tubes were set up in the room with baubles on top to make them look like pins, then residents could roll their decorated baubles down a cardboard ramp towards the pins.
It went down really well with the people living at Aliwal Manor and they had fun aiming the ramp towards the pins, rolling the baubles and seeing how many they could knock down. This created conversations about homemade activities, and how you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have fun!
Due to the success of this activity, Sarah took this game to the other lounges so others could get involved.
It was a soaring success, and everyone looks forward to finding out which other ingenious activities Sarah will come up with.
