The people living at Okeley Care Home recently celebrated VE day with a British themed day of activities and events.
Ahead of the day, the team decorated the home with red, white and blue coloured decorations. A balloon display was created in the reception area which was complemented by visitors, residents and relatives throughout the day.
The sun was shining down on VE day, so the team hosted the celebrations outside. Residents were handed British flags that they could wave and were served cold drinks to keep them cool.
The team planned a traditional lamb roast dinner with trifle and rice pudding for dessert. Residents agreed that the food was delicious, and the taste and smells of the roast dinner brought back many memories from family occasions and previous VE day celebrations.
In the afternoon, everyone headed back out into the garden as the team had booked a singer to perform. Traditional British snacks were available, which included sausage rolls and a homemade victoria sponge cake.
Residents waved their flags and sipped on prosecco as they listened to the afternoon’s entertainment. Some people sang along to the songs they knew, whilst others got up and danced along.
After waving the singer goodbye, residents sat and soaked up the sunshine as they spoke about their memories of the war.
It was a fun-filled day for all, sharing stories, sitting in the sun and celebrating all things British!
