Sweyne Court has a luau to celebrate all things Hawaii
It was a beautiful occasion to host a luau at Sweyne Court, as the home recently celebrated the isle of Hawaii, albeit at a later time than first anticipated. A Luau is a traditional party held in Hawaii to celebrate special occasions.
This activity was held in the care home’s garden and had originally been intended for the last Saturday in August, but due to unforeseen circumstances concerning the weather, they decided to hold it back another month. The team at Sweyne Court then decided since they’d had such a delightful spell of warm weather during September, to finally host their special Hawaiian themed-day.
On the day of the event, Sweyne Court had their very own Tikki bar as well as a buffet lunch. This was also followed by ice cream cornets for all of those that still had room for dessert. June, who lives at the home, told the team that it was, “a lovely buffet” that had been put on for everyone. From a safe social distance, there was special entertainment from singer Carly, who everyone agreed did a fantastic live performance.
Residents had previously made cardboard cut-outs of pineapples and tissue flowers during some of their arts and crafts activities. These were incorporated into the Hawaiian day by being hung around the garden, giving it a bright and beautiful display of colour. The residents also got into the spirits of the day by wearing grass skirts or ‘hula’s’, which everyone was a huge fan of.
Sweyne Court incorporated Hydration Day into the event by making some non-alcoholic cocktails of varying colours for everyone to enjoy. As residents relaxed and enjoyed the tasty food, they enjoyed listening to the music provided by Carly. After they’d eaten, team members and residents enjoyed dancing in the warmth of the sun and agreed that it was a ‘splendid’ afternoon. Resident Annie said she had a “wonderful time” and that she also “loved the grass skirts that we wore”. The home is already looking forward to planning their next themed event.
