Sewa Day is an international day of volunteering, inspired by the concept of selfless service. Sewa is a Sanskrit word and is embedded in the Dharmic traditions of ancient India. It means to sacrifice your time and resources for the benefit of others without wanting anything in return. Throughout the year, numerous Sewa Day celebrations are held to encourage acts of kindness and highlight the important work of volunteers internationally.
Bhavna Dhorajia, Sewa Day representative and National Spread Some Joy Leader, recently got in touch with Chief Operating Officer, Sam Manning, sharing some pictures, letters and poems created by children around the UK to be passed onto care homes across the group.
People of all ages get involved in these acts of kindness, from young children to older adults. Their work has been particularly important throughout this year with the pandemic disrupting life around the world, so their recent acts of kindness have been especially appreciated.
These pictures, poems and notes have been shared with all Excelcare homes where residents across the Excelcare family have loved seeing them and responding with their own that have been made during arts and craft sessions. We look forward to seeing the smiles this scheme brings.
Bhavna Dhorajia, National Spread some Joy Leader said, "During the lockdown, youngsters wanted to give something back to the community. They wanted to do something for the elderly and the vulnerable, so the children started doing drawings, letters, poems for the care homes to spread some joy and bring a smile to their faces. The drawings have been going out on weekly basis to 500 + care homes around UK and we have had absolutely amazing feedback".
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, care homes have not been able to welcome visits from school children and visiting nursery groups for intergenerational sessions, so thanks to the work of Sewa Day, residents will be able to continue taking part in their favourite sessions, safely.
We would like to express our thanks to all the volunteers who have continued to spread joy during these challenging times.
