Veterans Day (VE Day) is nationally celebrated on the 8th May each year to mark England's victory in Europe. For the residents living in Excelcare homes, this is a very personal day, as some lived or served in the war. Others have family members that were affected, so team members always ensure the day is marked properly.
The residents at Goldenley have been busy with the preparations this week for this year's 75th celebration.
The people living at Goldenley enjoy taking part in craft activities, so the Lifestyle Coordinator, Faith set about creating a VE themed craft session.
After chatting with the residents, they decided to make a display using old wartime memorabilia, including advertising used in the time and any old posters they could find.
The team helped to search the internet and print off some pictures to make the collage. While the residents were looking through them, memories were recalled and personal stories were shared.
Val, a resident at Goldenley, remembers being in an air-raid shelter as a child and said, "It was a funny time, people were all singing together. We all had to be together, even with people you didn't know".
The people of Goldenley enjoyed sharing their stories and creating the VE day collages, which are now on display around the home.
VE day celebrations will continue on Friday 8th May at Goldenley, so the residents can continue to celebrate this life-changing day, 75 years later!
