There was lots of potting, planting and pruning happening at Queen’s Oak Care Home last week as residents celebrated National Gardening Day.
Many of the people who live at Queen’s Oak Care Home are keen gardeners and have enjoyed practicing the hobby throughout their lives, so they were all looking forward to celebrating this national day and getting into the garden to give it a makeover.
To start the day, residents began planting new seeds to form a sensory garden. These are seeds that will blossom into colourful and scented plants, so when people walk around they will have a multisensory experience. This is good for mental and physical wellbeing, as walks around the garden help to ease stress and help people to feel relaxed.
Residents also started to plant their own vegetable patch. Once fully grown, these vegetables will be used in mealtime recipes at the home, so the residents can taste the ‘fruits of their labour’.
For added decoration, residents finished the day by planting some hanging baskets to bring some colour to exterior walls around the home.
Everyone had a great time celebrating National Gardening Day and look forward to spending more enjoyable days in the garden this summer.
