The residents at Primrose Croft have been receiving postcards from all around the world after signing up to the ‘Postcards for Kindness scheme’. It’s been incredibly successful across the Excelcare group, with many residents making friends they now write to frequently.
This week, Barbara, a resident at Primrose Croft, received a postcard from a lady called Daphne. In the card, she wrote about the different sewing project she was working on.
Barbara used to be a keen sewer and had a lovely Singer sewing machine. Unfortunately, she fell out of touch with the hobby when she was no longer able to use it, but this postcard inspired her to give hand sewing a try. After chatting with some of her friends about the idea, they were keen to get involved too, so team members got the equipment and materials together so each could take on their own projects.
Barbara is now putting this into practice and is making an owl-shaped cushion. She’s already made some good progress with the sides of the cushion already complete. Barbara has really enjoyed hand sewing, its therapeutic effects and reconnecting with a hobby from the past.
There are often accessible ways for people to reconnect with hobbies from the past. Team members at Primrose Croft are great at this and if there is a way to get people back involved with a pastime, they’ll do their best to make it happen.
Due to this, not only has Barbara found the passion for sewing again but her friends a new hobby that they can talk about together and share tips, strengthening relationships at the care home.
Barbara has said she will share this news with Daphne when she next writes to her and thank her for inspiring her to try sewing again.
