Postcards of Kindness inspire homemade envelope making at St George’s Court
St George’s Court Care Home residents always enjoy receiving new letters from ‘Postcards of Kindness’. This is an initiative that encourages people to write and send out postcards to residents of care homes. Dafne, writes to the residents of St George’s every week and has recently been sending in some very interesting homemade envelopes.
When the residents wrote back to Dafne they asked her if she could let them know just how she made them. Dafne very kindly sent back four different size templates for some of the residents to have a go at making some homemade envelopes.
As residents gathered around the tables for the activity, they were given an assortment of publications to sort through, including OK!, images from Scottsdales Garden Centre and various other craft magazines. Everyone enjoyed having a chance to find pictures that they liked the look of. It was a bit tricky at first attaching the images to the front of the envelope, but after a bit of practice and checking that they all fit together correctly, it was then time to cut around the letter template which was secured by paper clips.
Once in place, the residents then folded the cut out magazine paper to become an envelope and then stuck it all together. A small white piece of paper was then placed on the front for the address to be written on. After everyone had the chance to finalise their homemade envelopes, they were all very pleased with their finished results. Resident Nicky was the only resident that had made envelopes before but she said it was a lot easier making plain envelopes rather than ones with a picture attached. “These turned out really good!” She said, beaming with pride.
The team at St George’s would like to say thank you to Dafne for giving them another wonderful activity to do. Homemade envelope making is something that they will definitely be doing again in future.
