The residents at Glennfield Care Home have enjoyed a wide variety of activities since the start of this lockdown period. With more time to spend inside and visitation restricted, team members have been introducing new activities and coming up with fun ideas to keep spirits up.
One of these recent activities included making grass heads with the residents! This combined arts and crafts with gardening, two of the residents’ favourite hobbies here at Glennfield, so everyone was excited to get involved.
To make the grass heads, team members gathered tights, grass seeds, plastic pots and some small decorations to give each a personality.
They started off by cutting the foot from the tights, tying up one end and filling it with soil and seeds. Once filled, they tied off the other end and moved the contents around to form the perfect shape. ‘Googly’ eyes and buttons were added to give each their own character and placed in pots.
The residents really enjoyed this activity as it involved two of their favourite hobbies and allowed them to get creative too. It spurred conversations about gardening memories and encouraged others to share similar arts and crafts projects they had done in the past. It was a relaxing activity and one that will continue to bring joy as the residents watch them grow in the coming weeks.
Each has since been given a name and the residents are enjoying watering and checking on them daily! We’re all excited to watch the seeds grow and once they all have lengthy green locks, the residents will be in have a go at creating their own hairstyles!
