The residents at Queen's Oak Care Home learnt more about the importance of a healthy schedule when celebrating Nutrition and Hydration week at the care home.
With the current Covid-19 pandemic, people are thinking more about their health and wellbeing. So team members thought this would be a good opportunity to educate residents on why a healthy schedule is so important, the types of food that provide benefit and why staying hydrated is vital too.
To do this, team members set up a fruit stool in reception for passing residents to pick from and a mobile trolley to serve residents around the home. When everyone had selected their fruits and taken a bottle of water, they gathered in the lounge to learn more.
The residents were taught about the positive benefits of maintaining a healthy diet and exercise schedule. These include an improved mood, less risk of becoming unwell and increased physical strength. Team members went through the benefits of eating different fruits and why staying hydrated is just as important. It helps to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated and deliver nutrients around the body.
After learning the facts, residents said what they're favourite fruits were before moving on to a game of 'fruit bingo'.
It was a very successful day at Queen's Oak, that left many residents motivated to pick up a piece of fruit more often. Although the care home is fully catered with nutritional meals for the residents each day, activities like this help to provide choice and increase their independence.
