This week has been National Intergenerational Week. This is an online campaign, which this year has taken place from the 8th to the 14th March, designed to connect those passionate about intergenerational activity and celebrate the connections between different generations.
The teams at our homes have been doing all that they can to celebrate this week. At Etheldred House Care Home in Cambridge, Lifestyle Coordinator Julie set up a wonderful intergenerational surprise for the people living at the home.
Julie arranged for her granddaughter Caileigh, who lives in the Philippines, to have a video chat with the home. The schools in the Philippines are still shut at the moment due to the pandemic, and Caileigh is being home schooled by her mum and online classes. Being at home, she was more than happy to engage with the residents over video and sang them a Filipino hymn while on the call.
When Caileigh was done, she asked everyone if they could sing, to which they responded with a hearty rendition of ‘You are my Sunshine’. Caileigh and her mum really enjoyed this and smiled and clapped to the rhythm.
After all of the singing, they all engaged in a lot of discussion, with a variety of questions being asked from both sides. Caileigh said that she hopes she will be able to visit them all in person one day, and everyone let her know that she is welcome any time.
The people living in the home thought that it was such a lovely thing for Caileigh to agree to, and they really enjoyed the time that they had to get to know Caileigh and her mum.
