The Hunters Down Flipathon

Flipathon21.jpgPancake Day brought a full day of fun with it at Hunters Down Care Home in Cambridge.

The day began with the people that live at the home reminiscing about Pancake Day’s of the past, and also discussing their preferred pancake toppings. Many toppings were mentioned such as syrup or Nutella, but the reigning favourite was lemon and sugar.

They then discussed the reason behind Pancake Day. Pancake Day was originally known as Shrove Tuesday and was traditionally the feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. For the Christian denomination, Lent involves a time of fasting or giving up something in the 40 days leading up to Easter.

Before the pandemic, the people living at the home would take part in the Hunters Down Flipathon. A residents would be invited down to the Town Council in the square to represent Hunters Down in the contest, where they would be pushed around in their wheelchairs and flip their pancakes at all the balloon stops.

The Lifestyle Coordinators did not want them to miss out on the Flipathon this year, so they created one in the home instead! They made a frying pan from a paper plate and ruler and cut out a cardboard pancake picture, then everybody had a chance to see how many pancakes they could flip continuously until they dropped it.

Dorothy from Kings Community came out on top as the winner, managing to flip the pancake a grand total of 9 times! The average was about 4 flips, so Dorothy was an exceptional flipper.

Everyone at the home was incredibly grateful to the Lifestyle Coordinators for ensuring that the Hunters Down Flipathon lived on. They hope that next year they will be able to compete in the Town Council yet again.
