During the month of May, the people living in Excelcare homes were taken on a virtual tour of Nigeria as part of the Excelcare World Cruise.
This initiative is taking place across the Excelcare family throughout 2022, where each month, residents are taken on a virtual trip to different countries so they can enjoy food, drinks, experiences and culture of the selected country. The aim is to introduce residents to cultures from around the world and bring different experiences to them every month.
Across the family, team members hosted a variety of activities and found engaging ways to bring a taste of Nigeria into their homes.
At Sweyne Court Care Home in Rayleigh, the team centred their activities around Nigerian food, as baking and cooking activities are well enjoyed amongst the people who live there. The team started by searching for a traditional Nigerian cake recipe and found one that consisted of flour, sugar butter, vanilla extract, baking powder, nutmeg, milk, salt and 8 eggs.
As they were reading about the recipe, they learnt that the trick to this recipe was mixing the dry ingredients together first and then gradually add in the milk and eggs. So that is what they did!
Residents helped to measure out the ingredients and took turns mixing them together as people found this to be tiring. After the mixture was combined and poured into a tin, it was taken to the kitchen to be baked.
Residents were served a slice with their cup of tea in the afternoon, and everyone said how tasty it was.
Around the Excelcare group, residents and team members have enjoyed immersing themselves in Nigerian culture and learning more about the country’s traditions.
