The people living at Glennfield Care Home in Cambridge really enjoyed the activity that Lifestyle Coordinator Katie planned for them for National Comic and Magazine Day.
To honour the day, Katie brought in a collection of old comics and magazines that she believed would encourage reminiscence. The people living at the home were big fans of this, instantly recognising some of the titles and sharing their own stories and preferences.
The activity brought back so many wonderful memories of reading comics in the past. Some of the residents said that they used to look forward to the walk to the local shop with their parents when they would get to choose a comic. Alternatively, other people recalled watching out for the paper boy, who used to deliver comic books with their parents’ papers.
One of the old Beano comics still had the price on, showing that it was 26p and came with a free lollipop. Whoever had owned the Beano before had already eaten the lollipop, which everyone agreed was probably for the best as it would be rather sticky now! A discussion then arose about how much the comic book would probably cost now. One person suggested £1.50, whereas someone else thought £2.60. When Katie Googled it, the actual price was £2.75, and everyone was astounded with how much it had increased over the years.
A few of the other magazines on display were People’s Friends, Twinkle, Andy Capp and Hello. The Hello magazine featured a recent picture of the Queen, which inspired a discussion about the Royal Family.
Overall, this proved to be a really successful reminiscence session, and the people that participated thanks Katie for organising it for them.
