Mary is a resident at Castlebar Care Home who recently reached a life milestone when celebrating her 90th birthday!
During this 'lockdown' period, Castlebar has been unable to welcome visitors into the home. This means birthdays haven't been celebrated as they usually would, but reminiscing with Mary about some of her other memorable milestones provided some welcoming family comfort.
Mary was born in Stockbridge, Yorkshire on 28th April 1930. She attended Penistone Grammar School before going on to train as a teacher at Goldsmiths College.
She married her husband, John, who she describes as 'Wonderful', before settling into a home in Derby. Whilst living there, Mary continued to teach into her retirement and made some wonderful friends along the way.
Mary really enjoyed her work and lived an extremely active life, regularly playing bowles, going rambling and attending activities at the church.
She moved into Castlebar 5 years ago and is a very popular resident, so all of her friends and members of the team were keen to make her day special, despite the current situation.
Throughout the day, the team were supporting facetime calls with her family, so they could be a part of the celebrations and share their birthday wishes. Other enjoyable moments included an afternoon buffet with home-made cakes and group sing along as she opened her cards.
Despite the times, Mary was overjoyed with her birthday celebrations and said she had a lovely afternoon.
