Celebrating International Country Music Day at St George’s Court Care Home
The residents of St George’s Court Care Home in Cambridge enjoy listening to an eclectic range of musical genres. From old classics, rock and pop, to country music, they each groove to their favourite songs by tapping, clapping and dancing along. This strongly boosts wellbeing benefits amongst residents.
Opportunities to celebrate the music they enjoy is always welcomed, so for International Country Music Day recently, team members at the home hosted a day of themed musical activities.
This National Day was founded back in 2003 to celebrate the genre and raise the profile of country music artists. It also falls on the birthday of Hank Williams Sr. who has became one of the most legendary figure in the field of country music.
To celebrate in style, Lifestyle Coordinator Lindsey played a range of different songs from the country music genre. There has been a wide variety of country music throughout the years from the earlier sounds of Honky Tonk, to its later Nashville, and Outlaw stylings. As they played in the background, people enjoyed passing the remaining records around and admiring the artwork on each of them. This spurred conversations about the favourite country artists and some of the connected memories of the residents.
During their conversations, they also enjoyed learning about the lives of these artists and where they each came from.
Some of the songs that played from the changing eras of country music included:
Hank Williams – Your Cheatin’ Heart (1952)
Johnny Cash – Ring of Fire (1964)
Dolly Parton – Nine to Five (1980)
The favourite amongst all of the music that played seemed to be the songs of Slim Whitman, including ‘China Doll’ and ‘Jack to a King’. Later on, the group had a go at yodelling as ‘That’s How the Yodel Was Born’ played.
It was an enjoyable afternoon for everyone involved. Observing ‘Country Music Day’ was certainly a success and they look forward to celebrating other well-known genres at the home very soon!
