The people living at Aliwal Manor Care Home in Peterborough have been learning lots of interesting facts about carrots.
It all started in the garden, when team member Sarah was having a conversation with some of the people living in the home about how the grass and flowers had been singed due to the sun and hot weather. Sarah is an avid gardener outside of work, so this led to her telling everyone about how her homegrown carrots have luckily been faring quite well, due to the fact that they are in the shade.
When describing the vegetables, she mentioned that some are the regular orange colour, but some are white. The residents were really shocked by the latter description, as they had never seen white carrots before! So, out came the iPad, to show everyone all the different colours that carrots can be.
Following the rainbow carrot research, Sarah brought some of her crop in the next day to show everyone in person. Everybody had a good look at the homegrown carrots, and even had a little nibble of them at lunch! The general consensus was that they looked so funny, but they tasted quite sweet.
The carrots have certainly become a talking point at the home, and everyone agreed that they would like to try and grow their own next season.
