The people living and working at Sweyne Court Care Home in Rayleigh had a wonderful time immersing themselves in Polish culture.
The team at the home decided to make this a week-long activity, so that everyone could learn as much about Polish culture as possible. During their arts and crafts activities, the residents painted Polish flags and lettering, whilst also learning about the meaning of the flag. These were hung on the wall in the dining areas to add to the Polish experience.
Matilda, one of the Carers at Sweyne Court, is Polish and kindly purchased, prepared, and served a variety of Polish food for everyone at the home to try. Lunch consisted of Polish baked sausage, green beans, mashed potato, salad, lettuce and onion in cream, chicken schnitzel and Pierogi with meat. This was followed by delicious Polish cakes.
There were alternate food options for people who did not wish to try the new foods, but 60% of the residents got stuck in with the Polish cuisine, and thoroughly enjoyed each bite!
Matilda was born in Poznan, Poland 71 years ago, and came to England 17 years ago to work as a physiotherapist in a Mental Health Hospital. Soon after, she applied for a job at Sweyne Court and has been with the home for 16 years. Whilst working for Excelcare, Matilda has successfully picked up the English language and continues her physiotherapy work in the local community, alongside her position in the home as a Carer.
Matilda is known in the home for her kindness and generosity, which was clearly reflected in her commitment to making Polish day special. She will often bring in Polish delicacies in for team members to try, which they always greatly appreciate. Matilda has also recently welcomed a Ukranian family to live in her home in Poland until the war is over.
It was a wonderful week, and a great chance to learn about Polish food and culture. Everyone at Sweyne Court is looking forward to their next adventure around the world and all of the new things they will learn and try!
