Another Christmas season in Cambridge meant another visit from the Cambridgeshire volunteer bikers, and this year four of our Excelcare homes were lucky enough to be on the list.
The Cambridgeshire volunteer bikers are, in their own words, “a group of older, more responsible motorcyclists, who ride together and marshal local bike events.” They have become a much-loved part of the Cambridge scene as every Christmas they dress up as Santa Claus and get on their motorbikes to deliver mince pies to local care homes in Cambridge. It has become a tradition amongst Cambridgeshire communities to watch as they go by and wave to them.
Andy, one of the organisers first got the idea when his own mum was in a care home and could only recognise him as Father Christmas. Since then, it has turned into a fun tradition and way to bring cheer, with Andy noting that “is great to see the delight that the volunteers bring to everyone.”
Unfortunately, this year the two weekends that the volunteer bikers had dedicated to their cause came with incredibly unkind weather. The first weekend was extremely foggy and the second filled with non-stop rain. However, the bikers were adamant that they would still continue their route, as they knew that everyone needed that Christmas cheer this year now more than ever before.
The volunteer bikers visited Fitzwilliam, Primrose Croft, Etheldred and Rheola Care Homes, and each home was ecstatic to see them. Everybody thanked them for visiting and brightening up their days, plus the mince pies went down very well.
We would like to give a big thank you to the Cambridgeshire volunteer bikers for spreading joy when needed the most.
