Aliwal Manor put on their thinking caps for ‘Make a Hat Day
‘Make a hat day’ is a special occasion in the calendar in which everyone can express their creativity and artistic skills through creating some homemade head wear. This event is particularly popular with the residents of Aliwal Manor, who love to take any opportunity they can to raise a few smiles for their friends at the home.
At the start of the activity, Lifestyle Coordinator, Sarah was more than happy to organise papers and pens for the residents to create their own hats out of. Soon after sitting down, with cups of tea in hand, they got stuck into creating their own unique sets of patterns and designs. Residents reminisced about hats in general and the fact that the general public don’t seem to wear them anywhere near as much as they used to. Hat wearing was at its peak from the late 19th Century until the earlier parts of the 20th century, when the fashion began to decline.
On the same day as ‘Make a hat day’, it was also beloved resident Fred’s birthday, so all of the hats that were made were worn in honour of him. Connie, who also lives at the home, prepped and decorated an assortment of cupcakes to help celebrate his day, which he was rather chuffed to receive, along with all of the chocolates, cards and other goodies he was showered with.
In the afternoon, everyone and everything was dedicated to giving Fred the best day. Some of Fred’s favourite activities such as handball and football were played with the creative use of balloons and then everybody listened to some of his most loved tunes of yesteryear. Fred has always been a keen dancer so was also very happy to get up and have a dance or two with the ladies of Aliwal.
The home would like to wish all the best to Fred for his birthday week, and they’re really pleased that all of the residents had such a fun ‘Make a hat day’ experience too!
