Over the course of the lockdown period, visitation was limited at each Excelcare home to protect those living and working in them. This meant visits from community groups and entertainers were also put on hold.
The residents really enjoy their regular entertainment sessions as the sound of live music particularly brings back many happy memories. They’re also a welcome opportunity to get up and dance, an enjoyable activity for all.
Alex Southgate is a regular performer at Okeley Care home, but when lockdown restrictions were enforced, Alex was no longer able to attend. This didn’t stop him from engaging the residents with his tuneful sessions, by hosting virtual performances, completely free of charge through his YouTube channel. These were played at the home and residents loved seeing his face and hearing the tunes from the TV’s in communal spaces, or the comfort of their own room via tablet devices. He really helped to keep people in high spirits and with a smile on their face whilst they couldn’t visit their relatives.
Due to the recent easing of the lockdown measures, Alex Southgate was invited back to Okeley Care Home this week to perform for the people living there. He took a seat outside with his accordion, whilst the residents watched through the open doors to maintain a safe social distance.
Everyone was overjoyed to see him and said although he was outside, they could still benefit from the live musical vibes! Residents in the audience were waving their hands, tapping, clapping and singing along throughout.
It was a very well enjoyed afternoon and one the residents wish to repeat soon!
