Castlebar is a splendid, sensitively modernised Victorian villa in Sydenham, South London, where you are guaranteed a grand welcome.

At our family-run home, we offer a range of respite care and long-term residential care, residential dementia care, frail nursing care and end of life care within a happy community.

We are proud of our reputation for being open-hearted and friendly, supporting residents to feel safe, loved and to maintain a sense of purpose and belonging.

Whilst our setting may appear formal – with a sweeping driveway and portico entrance – inside you’ll find warmth, safety, security and comfort, thanks to our wonderfully dedicated and compassionate team, who hail from local areas such as West Dulwich, Peckham and Penge.

Castlebar retains its beautiful Victorian features whilst also being refurbished to a high standard to match the high-quality care we give, where everyone is treated like a member of our own family. We also enjoy our beautiful walled garden with stunning views over the City.

“Castlebar is a lovely care home. After visiting many others in SW London I am very pleased we chose this one for Dad. The staff are very kind and friendly and work hard to make sure he is well looked after. He particularly enjoys the activities, from pottery classes to days out to the beach. Staff are very knowledgeable and always let us know how he is doing and encourage us to join the family activities they organise. Overall the standard is very high. The staff provide great personable care.”

Relative of Resident

“It’s a great place to live. All the staff are happy to help you, the food is wonderful and I like my room! I made an excellent choice.”

“Thanks for the help and support that you gave my mother. We hold treasured memories of the lovely times we spent with her at Castlebar. The care was second to none and we know she really appreciated it, as do we, too.”

Relative of Resident

“When people ask me what made me choose to work with people living with dementia I always answer that it is 100% vocational… When I get home after a day’s work I feel fulfilled and contented because a person received the care they deserved.”

Staff Member

“Choosing a nursing home for an elderly relative is probably one of the most difficult decisions you will have to take. Castlebar provided the professional and caring environment that my relative required at the end of their life. The surroundings are grand but homely and the atmosphere is lively and happy.”

Elegant surroundings, welcoming home

Excelcare-Castlebar-Care-Home-P1.jpgCastlebar is a fully refurbished, stately Victorian villa providing not only a heritage setting but also a warm, safe, comfortable place for each special person who lives with us.

With high ceilings, large sash windows and many unique features, Castlebar’s beautiful surroundings are matched by our exceptional levels of professional care with a truly person-centred approach.

We have a range of welcoming communal lounges where residents can socialise in the company of friends and beautiful dining rooms for mealtimes. It’s a great time to come together and enjoy our freshly prepared, tasty and nutritious meal options which are lovingly created by our catering team based on our residents’ favourites, dietary requirements and cultural preferences.

The home’s setting is magnificent: located high on Sydenham Hill, our elegant walled garden is expertly maintained and centred around an impressive old mulberry tree that still bears fruit.

Our extensive grounds are perfect for a quiet walk, relaxing with friends and family or sitting on the patio and taking in the view. Residents can also retreat to the sunny conservatory and still enjoy the changing seasons and views of nature in comfort and warmth.

The breath-taking panoramic views towards the capital, and nearby Cox’s Wood, make Castlebar a haven for nature lovers all year round.

Our Care

Excelcare-Castlebar-Care-Home-P2.jpgAt Castlebar the happiness and comfort of every person who lives with us really matters to our kind and caring team members. Our key focus is on making the lives of the residents interesting, fulfilled, comfortable and enjoyable.

By spending quality time with the individuals who call Castlebar their home, as well as the people who are most important in their lives, we form strong, lasting bonds. Ensuring we have detailed knowledge of people’s health, social and wellbeing needs and preferences forms the heart of the outstanding care we provide.

We use a range of holistic therapies and sensory stimulation programmes to promote health, wellbeing and contentment in those who live with us.

We organise activities and events that are person-centred, that very much include family and friends.  These sessions include using music, physical exercise, singing and memory to improve mood, stimulate the senses and promote communication.
Our wellbeing sessions and individual-focused attention ensure the people who live with us live well. We encourage reminiscence, new friendships, support existing hobbies or help to find new ones.

Meaningful, engaging and fun

Excelcare-Castlebar-Care-Home-P3.jpgHere at Castlebar we provide a truly stimulating environment, full of laughter, fun and meaningful experiences.

Working with the wider home team, our residents and our in-house Lifestyle Coordinator create a fun-packed calendar of activities and events which not only support our residents’ current hobbies, but also provide opportunities to try new things within a safe and supportive environment.

Our programme includes film club, quizzes and singalongs, movement to music to keep us active and activities that make use of our beautiful outdoor spaces. We head out regularly too; with outings to museums and art galleries, trips to the country and seaside, picnics and pub lunches.

We also welcome visiting entertainers who sing, dance and make music for us to enjoy and join in with. Our local community gospel choir entertains us and everyone enjoys the regular visits by animal handlers, pupils from the local primary school and the secondary school students who come to help with sensory exercises and artwork sessions.

The regular themed parties are also a highlight on our busy activities calendar and are always great fun for our staff, residents and families alike.

This all contributes to creating a sociable, friendly and comfortable atmosphere, where everyone has a sense of purpose and belonging and is supported to live an exceptional quality of life.
