Excelcare-CQC-Inspected-and-Rated-Outstanding-Logo.pngA friendly and welcoming care home, Fitzwilliam House is situated in the large village of Cottenham, just five miles outside Cambridge. We are a friendly and homely care home, providing outstanding and passionate care that is exceptionally personalised and responsive to the needs of the people who live here.

Whilst the location of our home, with open fields and beautiful countryside nearby, is second-to-none, it is our amazing residents and kind and compassionate team, who really make our home outstanding.

In partnership with the special people who live with us, their friends and relatives, and our community professionals, we provide long-term and respite residential care, residential dementia care, including complex needs, and end of life care

We see each person as an individual, with our longstanding team members, many of whom live in Cambridgeshire and Newmarket, getting to know each person’s likes, dislikes and personal preferences.

This enables us to support independence, freedom of choice and create an environment where residents have an outstanding quality of life

CQC rated Fitzwilliam House as ‘Outstanding’ and observed how the people who live here are truly respected and valued as individuals. Each person is empowered as a partner in their own care as part of an exceptional service.

A truly outstanding home

Excelcare-Fitzwilliam-House-P1.jpgWith just 40 bedrooms over two floors, our bright and welcoming care home is small, friendly and accessible.

Owned by family-run provider Excelcare, Fitzwilliam House is a peaceful, relaxing retreat, with open fields and beautiful countryside just moments away, whilst being close to local shops, doctors and library.

As a smaller care home with a close, long-serving team, we take the time to get to know everyone really well and residents and visitors often comment on the homely, friendly atmosphere here, which makes us all very proud. We encourage residents to be as sociable as they wish to be with chatty communal lounges and an activities room, as well as quiet spaces and a mature garden to relax in.

We listen to the people who live here, taking time to find out all the important details about each person. From what type of food they like, which activities they enjoy and would like to try, to the kind of care they want. This is what makes our approach to caring completely person-centred

Our bedrooms are cheerfully decorated and furnished, and we encourage residents to personalise their rooms with much-loved photographs, ornaments, personal belongings and small items of furniture so their rooms are familiar and homely. We also support couples to stay together with several interconnecting rooms. We are delighted that Fitzwilliam House is a comfortable, inclusive and happy home where residents are supported to spend their days doing the things they love.

Following an inspection of in 2019, The Care Quality Commission (CQC) praised Fitzwilliam House for the ‘outstanding’ care we provide for the people who live here. They said that our team deliver care and support that is exceptionally personalised and responsive to people’s likes, dislikes and preferences. They observed how our team is kind, caring and motivated and people living here, along with their relatives and external professionals described our dedicated team in glowing terms.

Activities for all

Excelcare-Fitzwilliam-House-P2.jpgWe are dedicated to ensuring Fitzwilliam House is a fun and varied place to live, and go out of our way to bring engaging and varied activities and events to residents. Our Lifestyle Coordinator creates fantastic, personalised programmes of events and activities.

There are sing-alongs, card and games afternoons, arts and crafts sessions and film screenings to bring everyone together, and our Music 4 Health and other exercise classes keep residents active in laughter-filled sessions. From a lively book club, gardening and regular visits from local schools and other community groups, we make sure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

We also have weekly religious services conducted by visiting church personnel, monthly music therapy, and regular pub lunches, garden centre visits and daytrips to Cambridge. We celebrate birthdays and special occasions with enthusiasm and style, with home-baked cakes, decorations and, of course, family and friends.

Mealtimes are also one of the highlights of the day and bring everyone together. All of our meals are freshly cooked in our kitchens by a team of brilliant chefs who cater to specific dietary needs and cultural preferences, alongside residents’ favourite dishes.

Excellence in compassionate caring

Excelcare-Fitzwilliam-House-P3.jpgAt Fitzwilliam House, we are privileged to have a long-serving team of highly experienced people, who have spent many years caring for people with complex needs. Their reputation for excellence in dementia care is well deserved.

Our team is dedicated to ensuring every person we support receives sensitive, compassionate, appropriate care to help live their lives as happily and comfortably as possible.

To share our knowledge with the wider community and friends and family of residents, we also run a dementia support group, a carers support group and a dementia café that is open to the public.

These regular groups offer support, information and a place to come and discuss the needs of those living with dementia as well as the needs of their loved ones. We welcome relatives and the local community to join our specialists who share their knowledge to help those living with the condition.

Fitzwilliam House is just five miles north of Cambridge in the village of Cottenham. The village has plenty of facilities, with a range of shops, two GP surgeries, a dental surgery, public library.

The nearest train station is five miles southeast at Waterbeach, with connections to Cambridge, Peterborough and London. There is a bus stop two minutes’ walk away, with services to central Cambridge (a journey of about 30 minutes), and the A10, A14 and M11 are all less than four miles away for easy access.

For day trips out, there are lots of interesting places to explore nearby. Beyond the beautiful cathedral cities of Cambridge and Ely, there is the historic Manor at Hemingford Grey, the gardens at Anglesey Abbey or Wimpole Hall, and pretty little villages dotted throughout the Fenland.
